ABOUT

I’m Catrin — a portrait photographer based in Helsinki, drawn to authenticity, emotion, and connection. I’m interested in honesty over perfection, always seeking the moments that feel real beneath the surface. As a portrait, family, maternity, and birth photographer, I focus on creating images that celebrate genuine presence and human connection.
For me, photographing people is as much about presence as it is about the final image. Whether I’m quietly observing the rhythm of a family, documenting the anticipation of motherhood, or holding space during a birth, I work gently and with intention. I try to create a calm atmosphere where people can settle, breathe, and simply be themselves — that’s when the honest moments appear.
Why I Photograph People the Way I Do
I fell in love with photography in the darkroom, watching an image slowly emerge — a small act of alchemy that still feels magical. Since then, I’ve been fascinated by what can’t be easily seen: the energy between people and the quiet emotions beneath the skin.
Honesty Over Perfection
Early on, I began questioning why we feel the need to show only the polished surface. I’ve learned to embrace the beauty in imperfection, allowing the unfiltered and the vulnerable to be part of the story. Something shifts when we allow this — communication deepens, and connection becomes honest. This belief guides my work today, from birth photography and intimate family portraits to personal portraits of women and children.
Motherhood, Change and the Stories We Carry
I’m also a mother and a daughter — roles that shape the way I understand tenderness, strength, and change. Photography, to me, is a way of holding onto what moves continuously, much like the sea I’ve always felt close to. It’s never the same, yet always familiar.
A Slow, Tactile Approach to Photography
Outside photography, I find inspiration in working with clay. The slow, tactile process mirrors analog photography: working with my hands, trusting the material, and accepting that not everything can be controlled. Both remind me that beauty often arrives quietly.
Like the sea — steady and ever-changing — my work reflects movement, emotion, and the strength within vulnerability. Whether I’m photographing portraits, families, or births here in Helsinki, I strive to create images that feel honest, present, and deeply human.
If you feel drawn to quiet, honest imagery, I’d love to hear from you.
