Authentic birth stories: real, intimate and powerful

During my maternity leave, I found myself reflecting on change. Life had shifted, and so had I. I wanted to create something meaningful, something connected to the deepest human experiences, and that’s when I discovered birth photography.

To deepen my understanding, I completed Pinja Mitrovich’s birth photography course and continued studying internationally through documentary birth photographers and educational resources. This background helps me work with a calm, intuitive and informed presence, especially in emotional and unpredictable moments.

Synnytyskuvaus Helsingissä

Teen dokumentaarista synnytyskuvausta Helsingissä ja Uudellamaalla. Kuvaan synnytyksiä sairaalassa, kotona ja synnytyskeskuksissa rauhallisesti ja huomaamattomasti. Aina synnyttäjän toiveita ja rajoja kunnioittaen.

What Birth Photography Means to Me

The sea has always had its own language. Birth does too. Both move in rhythms that can’t be controlled, only followed.

When my own labour began, I was pulled into a quiet inner focus. Contractions came closer, the room grew warm, and everything around me turned softer and blurrier. I remember light, breath, and hands on my shoulders, yet so much was lost to the intensity of the moment.

Afterwards I realised how many details I missed, not because they weren’t important, but because I was completely inside my own bubble. Even though my partner took beautiful photos, I hadn’t dared to let anyone else into the room. I wasn’t sure how it would feel to have a photographer present.

Later I understood how powerful birth images can be. They help you see your own strength from the outside, remind you of what your body did, and bring softness when doubt appears.
That is one of the reasons I photograph births for others: to offer a gentle and honest story of a moment when time stops feeling like time.

A Calm and Documentary Approach

Giving birth is an intense and transformative journey. Birth photography allows you to return to the moment later on, to see your strength, the connection between you, and the quiet details that easily fade.

My approach is documentary, calm and respectful. It is not about posing. It is about presence, breath, touch, and the moment you meet your baby. I move quietly in the background and let your birth story unfold naturally.

Before your birth, we meet to talk about your wishes, your boundaries, and what you hope to remember. Every detail matters.

FAQ — Birth Photography

When should I book a birth photographer?
Ideally during the second or early third trimester. I take only a limited number of birth clients each year, and some months I am unable to offer birth photography at all.
If you want to be certain that I can reserve on-call availability for your due window, the earlier you get in touch, the better.

Do you photograph births in hospitals, at home or in birth centres?
Yes. I photograph births in hospitals across Helsinki and Uusimaa, as well as home births and birth centres. My approach is calm, quiet and respectful in every setting.

How does on-call availability work?
Your session includes two weeks of full 24/7 on-call availability around your due date.
If you would like a longer window, it can be extended up to four weeks for an additional €150 per week.

As soon as labour begins, you or your support person can contact me at any time. We discuss in advance who will call me, when to reach out, and how to make sure I have enough time to arrive. I commit to being at your birth within two hours from the moment you contact me.

Will the photography disturb the birth process?
No. I photograph quietly from the background and use natural or available light whenever possible. Most parents say they barely noticed me during the most intense moments.

Can we request privacy or limit what you photograph?
Absolutely. You are in full control over what is photographed and what remains private. We discuss your wishes carefully before the birth, and your comfort always comes first.

What if the birth is very fast or progresses unexpectedly?
Fast labours are completely normal. I come as soon as I receive your call, and our pre-birth consultation helps ensure everyone knows when to contact me so I can arrive in time. If the birth is too quick for me to reach you before the baby is born, I continue the session by documenting the first hours, bonding and the quiet moments that follow.
